Which country released the world’s first zinc-enriched
rice variety?
Now all of Bangladeshi people feel proud to say the
country’s name “BANGLADESH”.
Bangladesh released the world’s first zinc-enriched rice
variety. This biologically fortified (biofortified) rice capable of fighting against
diarrhoea and pneumonia-induced childhood deaths and stunting.
The authority to approve new crop varieties- called The National
Seed Board (NSB) approved release of the hi-zinc rice on August 26, 2013. The
name of this variety is Brri dhan-62.
Brri-62
is the most early-maturing variety (maturity period near about 100 days where
required 110-120 days for other fortified varieties) ever released for Aman (the
largest harvest which occurring in June-November) season. It also has the
maximum zinc content ranging from 20-22 ppm.
Zinc is required for more body functions than any other
mineral.
Due to Zinc deficiency, children’s natural growth hampers and
decreases their disease prevention capacity. Not only in Bangladesh, millions Asian’s poor people
suffer from hidden hunger, which includes zinc insufficiency. As a result of
zinc deficiency, nearly half a million children die each year in the world.
